Myths, Folklore & Symbolism: Vulva

Vulva

"Female generative power - in Western iconography most directly represented by the lozenge. The gate, passage and birth symbolism of the vulva is spirtualized in Christian art as the mandorla. In Tantric Buddhist art, the yoni is an important motif, depicted as two adjoining arcs symbolizing the gateway to spiritual rebirth. In Hinduism, the yoni can appear as a ring or rings at the base of the lingam dedicated to Shiva as creator." (Tresidder)
