Myths, Folklore & Symbolism: Lute

Lute

"In Renaissance art, an attribute of the personifications of Music and Hearing, and a popular emblem of the lover. Lutes or mandolins with broken strings appear in still lifes as symbols of discord. In China, the lute was an attribute of the scholar and, in common with many other musical instruments, of harmony - in marriage as well as in government." (Tresidder)
