Myths, Folklore & Symbolism: Freemasonry

Freemasonry: "A secret fraternity that was founded during the Enlightenment, it adheres to no particular religion, but its symbolism, which involves building, construction, and light, has been incorporated into cultlike rites. It strove for the 'world brotherhood of light' and the exercise of the 'royal art' (i.e., skilled 'stone mason work' on one's own ego and on building up the 'temple of humanity'). The rich and manifold symbolism of Freemansonry drew extensively on the craft customs of the medieval guild of stone masons." (Herder)
